Mental groups are among the groups of people who have concerns about the show & how it depicts the suicide issue. The show tells the story of an American Student in high school who commits suicide after a series of events, and leaves behind 13 cassette tapes for the 13 people she blames for her decision to end her life.
Netflix has recently added a warning card at the beginning of the show as well as before graphic scenes. On the other hand, 13 reasons why has received praise for raising awareness of the problems that teenagers and younger generations face day-to-day, including sexual assault, bullying and mental health issues.
The show has also generated controversy for showing the suicide of the central character, Hannah, in graphic detail. Netflix has released this statement:
"While many of our members find the show to be valuable driver for the starting important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisiories", the statement read.
Hence the warning prior to the start of the show. It's important to note it's rated TV-MA in the US, which means the show is only suitable for those over the age of 18.
"Moving forward, we will add additional viewing warning card before the episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series", added Netflix.
